My boyfriend floated an interesting idea the other day: When my dad goes back to Florida for the foreseeable future, or until it gets warm in the Northeast again, it’s possible for us to “live” at his house for a little bit, and really cohabitate like we wish to. We’d get to see how we fair in a house of our own, possibly bringing our pets together, who only know each other through towels we pass back and forth to know each others’ scents. I really like this idea and would certainly move in tomorrow if possible, which is true to form for me and my occasional impatience. However, through all this, I have to remember that my lofty ideals aren’t always a hole in one, as the winds of change can blow us off course and right back into the status quo.

A couple months back before Dad headed back down to the Sunshine State, my boyfriend and I told him we’d come over one of the weekends I was back in Jersey so we could do a little clearing out and organizing, including heading over to the storage unit to see what was in there. Even though we purposefully put off a trip up to Woodstock, New York, there was a small part nagging at me which knew Dad wouldn’t be on board with our timetable. I called him earlier that Saturday to tell him we were coming over, and he said, “Yes, we’ll talk about it when you get here.” That was my first clue that we weren’t about to get into the swing of things, despite his enthusiasm just a few days prior.
When we got to Dad’s house, I was ready to hit the ground running, but he wasn’t, and my boyfriend knew it too. I receded into the couch as Dad explained why things weren’t going to get done today, and all I could do was listen and stew about it, upset that I wasn’t going to get my way and annoyed that my baser instincts were right. I glared at my boyfriend, who had tried to explain to me not to get my hopes up on this earlier, as I could sense he was trying to calm me down. But all I could do was be transparent with my emotions about it, saying I was perturbed and annoyed with how the whole situation was shaking out, knocking me once again in a sand trap I knew I was walking into.

Though I was disappointed as my boyfriend and I went home that night, Dad did end up compromising and took us over to the storage unit the next day, giving us a look at what was in there and how conceivable it was for us to load it out. That got the ball rolling and my boyfriend and I were able to empty it weeks later in just a few hours. So I did get what I wanted eventually, even if I had to putter around for a bit before it got here.
My boyfriend keeps telling me to be patient about all of it, including us getting a house together or cleaning up my dad’s house. Everything is supposed to happen in its own time. I should know that, I’ve bloviated enough about it over the years. I just want one of my dreams to perhaps break the norm, to get here before it’s meant to so I can get started. Place the opportunity in my lap so I can spring into action on one of the many projects I’ve teed up over the years.
But no. I don’t think my life is meant to work like that. I think I’ve got to keep to this structure of whatever comes with a partnership. It’s not just me alone in the golf cart anymore. When two people come together and decide to make a life for themselves, all they bring to the table has to sort itself out once the intentions are chipped into place. My timetable becomes our timetable, and what I want in any given moment may be better suited for later. And sometimes, that gut instinct of what you’ve come to expect may just be the best thing for everyone in that moment. Because all it means is something else you’re sure of will find you eventually. So for now I’ll stay in the game and keep my standards where they lay. I may not always want to shoot for the ace, but I’ll sure settle for a few less bogeys around here.
