The dynamic of our team is about to change again. Thank God. It was long overdue. We had to have a talk after a severe copyediting error was made on-air today. I didn’t have anything to do with it, but it marked just another endless frustration with where we’re at in the news cycle. My EP casually asked me in the control room if everything was okay after I happened to turn back to look at him standing to watch the show. In that moment, I started to say yes, but I couldn’t hold it in anymore. Conditions were perfect to get out what I’ve needed to say for some time around here.

“No, I’m frustrated with all that’s been going on,” I said, pointing to the prompter and other monitors. He empathized, but I took it a step further to offer “my talents in copyediting” to help out that which was not previously getting done. I could see the wheels turning in his head as he mulled this new development before patting my shoulder and walking on. I knew I had set something in motion, all because I knew the temperature had boiled over by that point. It was time for a change, and everyone knew it. Later during our post-show meeting, he announced that I would be copyediting the entire show until further notice, something I’m really excited to begin doing at the crack of dawn tomorrow. Maybe this will help lighten the mood as we sort out everything else that hangs heavy in the air.

There are those who are good at reading the room, and those who are not. I feel like this is one of the more binary choices we face in life. Either you get it or you don’t. You can either pick up what someone’s putting down, or you can’t. And it seems these days, there’s very clear distinctions over what’s right and what’s wrong. I’m not speaking so much on political opinions or differences, I’m talking about those universal things that spark the visceral reactions over whether something resonates in the right ways. Not the deadly or catastrophic ways which we’ve recently been reveling in. The right way to do things. The realistic way to do things. The sane way, remember that?
My only hope is that we’re going to see a cool down rather than let things heat up around here again. Where we an all finally be in a place where common sense is rewarded and the degeneracy recedes back into the cracks again. We’ll see more people willing to get on board with the true majority and leave the rest of them in an echo chamber of their own choosing. As for me, I’m far more comfortable still being led by my bullsh*t detector, which has yet to steer me wrong. Because when the shift happens, and it will happen, you either ride with it, or miss the boat entirely. And as great as an island full of single-minded thinking may sound to some, it’s just as likely to eat itself when tempers get too hot.
Sorry for two newsroom-related posts back-to-back. Hopefully my tea leaves are reading a news respite in the near future.
