I carry a pocket Constitution everywhere I go. Everyone found that out today, including you. It’s just one of the weird things I’ve done lately, like hoard water and non-perishables. You know, just in case. Anyway, I have a couple Cato Institute Constitutions lying around because I feel it’s important to have things like that in print. It’s what makes our country what it is. I’m no Constitutional scholar (unlike everyone on X who is weighing in on the Trump Colorado ballot debacle), but I know it’s a sacred document that deserves respect, so I may as well preserve it while we still can.

I was sitting at my desk just idling, both my headphones were in so I could listen to one of my favorite news guys lay out why he distrusts Nikki Haley so much. One of the network’s hosts came up to my co-workers behind me. I couldn’t make out what any of them were saying, but they sat there for a good five minutes making conversation before one of them started searching through other people’s desks for something. I plucked my headphones out and turned to watch, still hearing the host mumbling something and my co-workers agreeing. I watched the one searching for a bit before I finally asked what she was looking for.
“A pocket Constitution,” she said.
“Oh, I have one in my bag,” I announced, and promptly got it. I could hear their astonishment, which then almost turned to boredom. “Of course you’d have a pocket Constitution,” she told me. I kind of dug how no one was shocked even though they were. Another one told me it’s a political selling point for my inevitable City Council run. What an intriguing thought. I let the host borrow it and perhaps it’ll show up on TV tonight. Even if it doesn’t, I’m proud to have showcased what a liberty-minded lady I am, especially in a world trying so hard to take that away.

I’ve written a lot about politics this month, so I’m sorry if it’s grating. It’s kind of what happens in December when I follow the news. And though I’ve already spoken about losing our standards, I believe it’s important to hold true to them long after they’ve been rediscovered.
Those we’ve (sometimes mistakenly) trusted enough to lead our institutions, be it our school systems, our cities, countries, or just plain old community boards, they have to vow to uphold the ideals set long before they got there. And I think it’s just falling by the wayside these days. This upcoming January stands to be one of the wildest on record, thankfully pushed along by this foundation we’ve set here in December. And I promise here and now to never forget the values that brought me here in the first place.
I think jumping all in with MAGA hats and sloganeering is still cringey and I don’t support any political spectrum doing that. I just want to see real people again. People who care enough to want to be in it for the people, not their pockets. Did we ever have that in the history of our country? Could we ever have it again? I’m thinking yes. I’m ready to see how it all shakes out in the new year. And hey, why not say my vows on the Constitution? If a childless dude can swear in on a stack of gay porn books to his term for school board, I can swear on something with actual meaning, right?
