April Awakening: Day Twenty-Five 🌤️☀️🥶
“I hope you’re right.”
People say this to me a lot. My eternal optimism and wide-eyed idealism just allow for me to keep positive in times of strive. It’s not always easy and I don’t always succeed, but it’s the the thought that counts, right? And boy, do I have a lot of them. Sometimes it’s all I have. Sometimes, it’s all I can offer. Even the greatest ideas have to begin somewhere, and it’s fair time to give the little guy’s voice a shot at finding a way to echo through the ages.
These comments mostly come from Twitter. I wax poetic about how much better things can be around here, and I’m not just talking about New York City. I have these visions of what the future could be; Prosperity and happiness for everyone with no residual underhandedness going on. What? You don’t think so? You think I’m crazy? Maybe I am. But you still hope I’m right, don’t you?
What if we all actually received checks from the federal government for decades of wasting our taxpayer dollars? What if they put cameras in public schools to keep an eye on teachers and find a way to achieve remote learning? We’re already witnessing the death of higher education, why not use all the inevitable empty dorms for low-income, city-funded housing? If any of you steal these ideas, I’ll know. I’ve got a copyright on this blog for a reason. But that’s all these are: ideas. The follow-through as a single entity floating in space isn’t as easy as an overnight success story.
There was one time I thought I could get these ideas actually kickstarted when I saw a mutual Twitter follower wanted to begin a coalition to combat the progressive craziness in Manhattan. He had a call-to-action on his page, and I messaged him saying I’ve got ideas and wish to help. He asked me if I had any experience organizing or forming an LLC, to which I had to say no. I just wanted to help. I didn’t realize things had to be so official. My idealized brain tells me people will just get out of their homes and then the revolution happens. It’s not so. It’s not how we have to organize when playing in this system. I was disappointed my great ideas weren’t enough to be brought on board, but he got his coalition up and running anyway. I don’t mind cheering from the sidelines until someone is crazy enough to hand me the microphone and hear what I really have to say.
I hope when the time comes and I actually have a chance to get these ideas into a place of action, I won’t clam up or get tongue-tied. My offerings just appear differently. Not everyone is meant to be a leader or a CEO. Some of us just hang out on the bottom of the cliffside, hoping whatever we shout into the abyss gains enough momentum to bounce off the canyon walls, so someone with the means to get started can actually make it happen. I know I’m idealistic. But wouldn’t it be fun to at least try something new?
